On Christmas Eve in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region, a Ukrainian soldier known by the call sign “Sanych” connected with his family through a video call while serving on the frontline. Footage shows soldiers from the National Guard’s 13th Operative Purpose Brigade “Khartiia” sharing a modest Christmas meal, with rifles leaned against the wall.
Sanych spoke online with his wife Oksana and son Maksym as they celebrated Christmas at home amid ongoing power cuts. His family described celebrating by candlelight due to electricity outages, a daily reality during the war. Reflecting on the holiday, Sanych said this was his third Christmas spent on the frontline, noting that Christmas traditionally symbolizes family unity for him.
