Read more at https://musicminister.net/shepherd Isaac Watts was a smart, edgy English rock star of hymns back in his day (the early 1700's). Isaac wrote, “The singing of God’s praise is the part of worship most closely related to heaven; but its performance among us is the worst on earth.” So he decided to DO something about that, and began to write brighter, more cheerful church songs for congregational singing. The traditional church leaders criticized his work, but his congregation loved his new songs. He would also write songs specifically to go along with his sermons. Perhaps his greatest contribution was the way he used his wonderful ability in writing -- and rhyming -- to make scripturally respectable paraphrases of many sections of the Bible and set them in modern (for his day) rhyming lyrics to be sung in church.
