Holtzapffel Rose Engine Lathe No. 1636, built in 1838, using the original Geometric Chuck as a differential to turn an F4 rosette into an F12 to be used on a lathe made in 2021, the MADE Lathe.
Notice how the spindle is turning at a different rate than the work. The ratio is set with the gears on the back of the chuck. The front gears serve only as power transfer.
The lathe and Geometric Chuck both retain their original finish with the “curling,” a method invented by John Jacob Holtzapffel who founded the firm in 1792. The Plumier Foundation is its home.
