Ruud Krol's speed in football instinct allowed him to defend against the best players of his generation and he possessed a savage shot. Krol's reading of the game was fantastic. As a captain in 1978 final, he plays brilliantly, his long passes were permanent in the side of opponents. Ruud Krol a complete player who instilled confidence in those around him.

Most of his career he played for his hometown club and he became a coach after retirement. Krol mainly played as a sweeper or left-back, however, he could play anywhere across the back line, or in midfield as a defensive midfielder, due to his range of passing with both feet, temperament, tactical intelligence, and ability to start attacking plays after winning back the ball.
