When you’re trying to calculate the brake horsepower consumed at your motor in the field, there’s a pretty simple equation that you can set up to figure it out. You’re going to need to know the voltage into the motor. You’re going to need to know the amp draw from the three legs, assuming it’s a three-phase motor. So, voltage, amps, and then there’s a numerator constant. You’re going to need to know the motor’s efficiency, the motor’s power factor, and lastly, the denominator constant.
OK. So let’s go through an example. Let’s say you have a pretty typical voltage input to the motor in the United States of 460. And you’re consuming, let’s say on average through your three legs you’re consuming 100 amps. And your numerator constant when you’re using voltage and amps is always 1.732. [We’re assuming motor efficiency of .937 for this example] For motor power factor, again you can probably find that on the nameplate of your motor, and for this example, we’re going to use 0.85 for a motor power factor. And then the denominator constant (again for voltage and amps) is always going to be 746.
So now let’s put this equation together. We’ve got a numerator and a denominator. Up in the numerator, we’ve got voltage times amps times the numerator constant times efficiency times power factor. In the denominator, we have the denominator constant. So for our example, we have 460 times 100 times 1.732 times 0.937 times 0.85, all over 746, and we calculate a resultant horsepower of 85 being consumed at your motor.
