Modernising Murrumbidgee: Becoming the world's most efficient irrigation network

Completed in early 2025, the modernisation of the Murrumbidgee Irrigation network in Australia stands as one of the most advanced irrigation projects in the world.

This large-scale transformation upgraded 1,500 metered outlets, automated 360 regulators, refurbished 20 kilometres (12 miles) of open earth channels, and constructed a new 5,000 megalitre (4,000 acre-foot) surge reservoir. Together, these improvements are saving more than 7,400 megalitres (6,000 acre-feet) of water each year for the environment, farmers, and surrounding communities.

The project’s success was driven by collaboration, innovation and forward thinking. It brought together government support, the strength of Australian manufacturing, a bold cultural shift within Murrumbidgee Irrigation, and farmers who embraced new technology to secure a more sustainable future.
