Die Titelmusik, die sich durch den ganzen Film zieht, beginnt mit dem Text: 'There's no need for talking when you really love.' Die 16-jährige Ina ist zum ersten Mal verliebt. Ihr Freund Christoph ist 17 Jahre alt und Gitarrist in einer Schülerband. Die gemeinsame Freizeitgestaltung in dieser kleinen Gruppe bietet die Möglichkeit zum Flirt und zu ersten zaghaften körperlichen Kontakten. Als Vorbilder in Sachen Partnerschaft dienen den beiden Hauptdarstellern die begeisterungsfähige, sehr emotionale 17-jährige Helen und der erfahrene, selbstsichere 22-jährige Markus, beide ebenfalls Mitglieder der Schülerband. Die Mitteilung der verzweifelten Freundin Helen, dass sie sehr wahrscheinlich schwanger sei, macht Ina stark betroffen und sehr nachdenklich. Im anschließenden Gespräch mit der Freundin über den Gebrauch bzw. Nichtgebrauch von Verhütungsmitteln wird das fehlerhafte Verhalten von Helen und Markus erkannt. Kurze Zeit danach kommt es im Probenraum der Band zum Austausch von Zärtlichkeiten zwischen Ina und Christoph. Als die Annäherungsversuche zu massiv werden, befreit sich Ina plötzlich aus seiner Umarmung, weint und verlässt wortlos den Raum. Christoph bleibt enttäuscht zurück. Als kurz darauf Markus auftaucht, erzählt er Christoph von Helens Schwangerschaft. Markus selbst sieht zu diesem Zeitpunkt einen Schwangerschaftsabbruch als einzigen Ausweg. Im Verlauf des Gesprächs wird deutlich, dass die beiden Freunde nicht offen und ehrlich über das Thema 'Verhütung' miteinander reden können. In der Schlusssequenz des Films kommt es zu einer Aussprache zwischen Markus und Helen über die Schwangerschaft und zwischen Christoph und Ina über ihre Beziehung. Christoph hat ein Kondom an Inas Hausschlüssel befestigt als symbolischen Hinweis darauf, dass er sich für die Schwangerschaftsverhütung verantwortlich fühlt, klug geworden aus dem folgenschweren Fehlverhalten von Markus und Helen. Ina versteht den Hinweis und macht ihrerseits deutlich, dass man auf den richtigen Zeitpunkt auch warten können muss. Trotz der immer noch bestehenden Probleme beider Paare bleibt der Beobachter mit dem Gefühl zurück, dass nun, da sie miteinander reden, eine Lösung gefunden werden kann. Der Film klingt aus mit der nun berichtigten Botschaft im Text des Titelsongs: 'There's a need for talking when you really love.'

The theme music that runs throughout the film begins with the lyrics: 'There's no need for talking when you really love.' Sixteen-year-old Ina is in love for the first time. Her boyfriend Christoph is 17 years old and plays guitar in a school band. Spending their free time together in this small group provides opportunities for flirting and tentative physical contact. The two main characters look up to the enthusiastic, very emotional 17-year-old Helen and the experienced, self-confident 22-year-old Markus, both of whom are also members of the school band, as role models in matters of relationships. The news from Helen, her distraught friend, that she is very likely pregnant, deeply affects Ina and makes her very thoughtful. In the ensuing conversation with her friend about the use or non-use of contraceptives, Helen and Markus's flawed behavior is recognized. Shortly thereafter, Ina and Christoph exchange affection in the band's rehearsal room. When his advances become too intense, Ina suddenly breaks free from his embrace, cries, and leaves the room without saying a word. Christoph is left behind, disappointed. When Markus shows up shortly afterwards, he tells Christoph about Helen's pregnancy. At this point, Markus himself sees abortion as the only way out. During the conversation, it becomes clear that the two friends are unable to talk openly and honestly about the topic of contraception. In the final sequence of the film, Markus and Helen have a discussion about the pregnancy, and Christoph and Ina talk about their relationship. Christoph has attached a condom to Ina's house key as a symbolic reminder that he feels responsible for contraception, having learned from Markus and Helen's serious mistake. Ina understands the hint and makes it clear that you have to wait for the right moment. Despite the problems that still exist for both couples, the viewer is left with the feeling that now that they are talking to each other, a solution can be found. The film ends with the now corrected message in the lyrics of the title song: 'There's a need for talking when you really love.'
