The main writer I collect is P G Wodehouse, a 20th century Humourist who grew up in England and later moved to America.
He's famous for the Jeeves and Wooster series, but attracts the most astonishing range of fans. Even his Nazi captors professed a liking when he was interned by them (he was living in France when it became occupied).
His output is astonishing, around 90 books but also some very successful lyrics for major musicals. He worked with Jerome Kern, Guy Bolton and some wannabe pianist accompanist called George Gershwin.
His name is mud in Hollywood as he was asked to work on screenplays - and then found that very little was required of him. Naively, he expressed this to an interviewer who was delighted to get a scoop on how writers got paid a small fortune to do very little. (Of course, Wodehouse was getting paid a great deal for his famous name and literary history - not every writer was getting paid well.)
