On January 25, 2025, Hamas handed over four female Israeli soldiers—Karina Ariev, Daniela Gilboa, Naama Levy, and Liri Albag—to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Gaza City. The soldiers had been abducted during Hamas’s attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, when their observation post near Gaza was overrun. This release is part of a ceasefire agreement between Hamas and Israel. In exchange for the four hostages, Hamas announced that Israel would release 200 Palestinian prisoners, including members of Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), some of whom are serving life sentences. This marks the second prisoner swap since the ceasefire began on January 19, 2025. The first swap saw Hamas release three Israeli civilians in exchange for 90 Palestinian prisoners. The release aims to ease tensions in the ongoing 15-month conflict between Israel and Hamas.
