About the series:
'Musings with Karuna Sagari' are thought experiments that I have externalised as video essays. The series could range from insights from poetry, gnawing questions that have intrigued me as an artist and as a person or just a thought worth pondering upon.
As the first in the series, I reflect upon the classification of the Heroine into Uttama (superior), Madhya (ordinary) and Adhama (inferior). In an Abhinaya class, these classifications are quite casually discussed as though it is like reading from an official cv of a person. Well, it is not! These are social constructs! As human nature is complex, should we rethink these constructs as the starting point for Abhinaya?
I have taken Manimekhalai, the protagonist in a 5th century Buddhist epic as an example to indicate the fluidity of human nature.
Think along. I would urge fellow artists, students and educators to go through them and express your thoughts on the subject in the comments.
