Before facing off against Oklahoma and Nebraska in back to back weeks, the Colorado Buffaloes would travel to Lawrence, Kansas to take on a young Jayhawks team. With eleven starters on Kansas classifying as sophomores or freshman, the Buffaloes would have to refrain from overlooking a team that would show vast improvement throughout the year. With the return of Eric Bieniemy from a shoulder injury, CU would have no problems dismantling the Jayhawks.
Colorado would pull out to an early lead, scoring 17 points in the first quarter while holding the Jayhawks scoreless. Darian Hagan would connect with Mike Pritchard twice early in the quarter, one reception of which would go for a 44 yard touchdown. Yet, A young Kansas team would answer in the second quarter. On the first play of the quarter, Hagan would fumble the football after a blindside hit from Kansas linebacker Pat Rogan and CU would lose possession. Kansas would then build off the momentum, outscoring the Buffs 10-3 and decreasing the CU lead to only ten points heading into half time. Then, the Buffs would roll. Kansas would fail to score again for the rest of the game while Bieniemy and company would go on to put up 21 points in the third quarter alone. Bieniemy would finish the day with 174 yards rushing and three touchdowns. The Buffaloes defense would hold Kansas to 210 total yards of offense by games end while holding them to 3.3 yards per play.
As expected, the Buffaloes would go on to win the game by a score of 41-10. With his three touchdown performance, Bieniemy would pass CU legend Bobby Anderson's record (212) for the most points scored in CU History. The Buffaloes would improve to 6-1-1 on the year and would find themselves moving up to the No.8 spot in the AP Poll rankings the next week.
