London ATC denied our IFR Airways join

I finally met the quirks of the UK ATC system. We were too low and in the wrong routing back to the London FIR which meant we would leave controlled airspace and thus find it very difficult to rejoin, compounded by the short-staffing situation due to COVID.

After 2 hours in the Diamond DA40, we land in Gloucester seconds before official night, another well-timed, well-planned flight. Or was it?
