One piece of footage that is currently making the rounds on social media is the 45-point masterpiece of Cebuano hoops legend Dondon Hontiveros in Game 5 of the 1999 Metropolitan Basketball Association (MBA) National Finals against Alex Compton, Rommel Adducul and the rest of the vaunted Manila Metrostars.
In the video, a then-22-year- old Hontiveros is seen unleashing his entire repertoire of moves — from high-looping three-point bombs, slashing lay-ups and even a thunderous in-your-face slam — that fueled the rabid Cebuano crowd at the steaming-hot Cebu Coliseum as the Gems desperately tried to take the upper hand in a series that was tied at 2-2.
SunStar Cebu recently chatted with the professional cager-turned-Cebu City councilor about that pivotal game that not only thrilled thousands of viewers all across the country but also helped shape the career of one of the greatest athletes Cebu has ever produced.
According to Hontiveros, he and the rest of his teammates knew they were in for a dogfight after splitting the first four games of the series. In between preparing for the game and accommodating tons of ticket requests, Hontiveros recalled heading to that game feeling excited and nervous.
“I felt excited and nervous. Excited to go up in the series. If you remember the first two games in Manila, we really saw why they were able to win 22 straight games. We got beaten soundly,” said Hontiveros. “Then in Game 3, we surprised them and in Game 4, we won a close game. I was nervous of how we would respond to what the Metrostars would bring to the game. I remember we were well prepared by our coaching staff.”
Bolstered by the support of friends and family and the utmost confidence his coaches and teammates had in him, Hontiveros shrugged off a slow first half that saw him score a mere six points and exploded for 16 in the third to help the Gems come back from a 56-48 halftime deficit and take a 76-75 lead heading to the fourth canto.
He continued his rampage in the fourth, scoring 12 points including two free-throws that put the Gems up, 104-102. But the game eventually went to overtime after Compton hit a tough fadeaway over the outstretched arms of Hontiveros with just seconds left in regulation.
To this day, Hontiveros remains in awe of what Compton was able to do in spite of his leech-like defense.
