The Flickering Shade

FLUTTER of something in the past, that made
A light of white across the flickering shade;
That passed us near, but will come back no more.

Shudder of something in the days that are;
Possible music in sweet notes that jar:
And not unlike some notes we heard before.

Visible glimpses of old robes again:
Audible echoes of old sounds, with pain
And distance touched, but playing o'er and o'er.

As if love might have been, and has not been:
As if love yet, though faint, in hope were seen:
A far, faint flicker, down a lonely shore.

O follow, follow, and find it! o'er the slope
Of matted sands, before the tide come up!
Ere night close soon, and it be seen no more!
