A short overview of the custom built King of Sweden Clavichord. In this video, details are given regarding the construction and origins of this lovely and mysterious clavichord. The builder, one Mr. Thomas Drew of San Buenaventura, California, left an inscription on the lowest keylever (not shown in the video) which reads "1981 of instruments, his fifth, of this type, his second." This inscription is all that I have been able to uncover regarding the origins of this instrument. Using only the power of deductive reasoning (meaning, since I can't find anything else out, I'll just go ahead and assume, haha), it is my belief that the "first" type of instrument which Mr. Drew built was in all likelihood a King of Sweden Clavichord assembled from a Zuckermann Kit. This instrument appears to have been built using parts supplied by Mr. Drew himself (specifically, the Maple for the case, as well as the material for the sharps and natural touchplates) along with hardware procured from Zuckermann Harpsichords International (soundboard and bridge, tangents, tuning and hitchpins, keylevers, tuning hammer, etc), making for a truly unique and one of a kind instrument! While it is lovely and unique given the materials used in its construction, from a practical point of view, it is no different than a typical Zuckermann King of Sweden Clavichord built during the same time period as this one.
