Understanding the Surf Forecast for Beginners : Part 1, What size waves and which wind do I want? Basically beginners want to learn on waves in the 0-3ft range. Even if the forecast says 0-1ft this could be a good day if you're a first time beginner or still consider yourself a newbie. Waves 4-10ft will be too intimidating for you if you're still a beginner. Waves over 10ft are for kamikazes and Kai Lenny only... The wind also greatly affects the waves. Typically an offshore wind or little to no wind is the best, but when you're starting out it's best to practice in all conditions except for a very strong "onshore wind" or a very strong "sideshore wind". A light onshore wind can be the best for catching your first "green waves" since the waves will usually be less steep.
