Nirupa Roy was born as Kokila Kishorechandra Bulsara on January 4, 1931, in Valsad, Gujarat, she was an iconic Indian actress who left an indelible mark on Hindi cinema. Known as the "Queen of Sorrow," she captivated audiences with her poignant portrayals of tragedy and sorrow over a career spanning from 1946 to 1999. Starting with her debut in the Gujarati film Ranakdevi and her first Hindi film Amar Raj, she initially played mythological roles, earning reverence as a goddess-like figure. In the 1970s, Nirupa Roy became synonymous with the sacrificial, suffering mother, most notably in films like Deewaar (1975), where her iconic dialogue "Mere paas maa hai" became a cultural milestone. With over 275 films, three Filmfare Awards, and a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004, her legacy as Bollywood’s beloved on-screen mother endures. She passed away on October 13, 2004, but her emotional performances continue to resonate with audiences.
