Sri Keshavanatheshwara (Moodugallu / Moodgal), Keradi
• What it is: a small, ancient cave shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva (Keshavanatheshwara) set inside a natural rock cave.
• Special feature: the sanctum is reached by wading through knee-deep clear spring water inside the cave; there is a swayambhu (self-manifested) Shiva-linga in the water and another installed linga nearby. Tiny fish often brush visitors’ feet — part of the experience.
• Location / admin: Moodugallu (Moodgal) near Keradi village, Kundapura taluk, Udupi district, Karnataka. (About ~50 km from Kundapura and ~74 km from Udupi by road, with the last stretch passing through Mookambika Reserve Forest / mud tracks).
History & vibe
• Locals and small travel writeups describe it as an old / possibly medieval cave-shrine tucked in forested rocky terrain. The site feels very quiet, green and secluded — more of a “hidden gem” than a crowded tourist temple.
Practical info & tips
• Timings / pooja: Local reports list daily opening and regular pooja (early morning); one writeup lists temple hours roughly 6:00 AM – 7:00 PM and a main puja around 9 AM. (Confirm locally before visiting.)
• How to reach: drive from Keradi / Kundapura — the final approach is a narrow / sometimes muddy track through forest. Small cars can make it in fair weather but expect an uneven road; many visitors go by local vehicle or two-wheeler.
• What to carry / wear: clothes you don’t mind getting wet (you’ll wade), waterproof slippers or sandals (avoid loose flip-flops that slip), torch/headlamp if you plan to enter deeper into the cave, water, insect repellent. Respect temple decorum.
• Best time to visit: dry season or just after rains — cave water is present year-round but monsoon can make approach roads worse and water levels higher; mornings are pleasant and less crowded.
• Safety: the cave floor is wet and can be slippery; take care while wading. Locals say snakes aren’t commonly seen near the sanctum but always be cautious in forested areas.
