Lana Del Rey: The Rise of The “Amateur Aesthetic”

Why is the "amateur aesthetic" so popular now? Everywhere you look on TikTok or Instagram, everyone seems obsessed with a 2000s digital/low-quality "look." In today's video I want to touch on this trend, diving into the "indie artist" and "low budget aesthetic", exploring how we are seeing a rise in appreciation of amateurish or low-quality aesthetics and how that relates to the current trend of "romanticizing life" on social media. We will begin by explaining what the "indie" or independent artist is in general, how their aesthetics eventually become immortalized by fans, Lana Del Rey and how her unreleased music and self-made videos are some of the first examples of the "amateur aesthetic" gaining popularity. We will also talk about the role of social media, Tumblr, "aesthetic cores", influencer culture, nostalgia, and how hyper individualism influenced the development of this aesthetic and appreciation for "low budget authentic art". We will then end by discussing Romanticism and the idea that we are possibly seeing a current rise in its use, with everyone romanticizing any and everything about their lives and how social media and rapid technological change have influenced it. We will also cover a bit about Ethel Cain and Chappell Roan and how their aesthetics help show us how to appreciate and romanticize our small town lives.
