Hello, I’m Geoff, for my 60 Second challenge, I want to tell you about the GWR’s locomotive water scoop.
The water scoop was a simple Victorian invention, but enabled GWR express locomotives to fill up with water whilst on the move, reducing journey times by up to 30 minutes.
The locomotive was fitted with a hinged water scoop feeding a supply pipe into the tender reservoir and on a journey the scoop was lowered into a trough to collect water.
Water troughs were fitted between the rails of straight track and continually filled from a nearby watercourse; there were 18 of these troughs on the GWR network.
It required great skill and knowledge of the track to operate the water scoop successfully. The faster the train, the quicker the tender filled. If it filled too quickly, the tender overflowed and gallons of water would spill onto the footplate, giving both Fireman and Driver an unexpected bath!
