On the occasion of Georg Baselitz’s exhibition ‘Sofabilder / Sofa Pictures’ at White Cube Hong Kong in 2022, curator Christian Rattemeyer discusses the series of drawings and paintings on show.
As part of his lifelong quest to merge abstract and figurative forms, Baselitz has created his new paintings using a monotype process, connecting to the work of artists such as Edgar Degas, Max Ernst and other Surrealists. Returning to the figure of his wife, Elke, for inspiration, but this time painting from memory, Baselitz creates skeletal compositions that take on haunting new form as ethereal musings on mortality.
