This is the sound of the savannah when the water disappears.
There is no rain. There is no movement. Only the hot wind dragging dust on a floor
cracked, and the heavy silence of a place that is slowly being emptied of life. What
you hear is not calm. It’s exhaustion. Every pop from the dry soil, every leaf crumbles under the
wind, carries the same message: here survival has collapsed. The savannah
African is not asleep - it is being tested. In this place, drought does not come with
violence. It comes with persistence. It steals the green, hardens the earth, weakens bodies and
shortens the time. Gradually, the savannah ceases to be a home and becomes a field of
absolute resistance. There is no neutrality here. Either you adapt... or you disappear.
In many regions of Africa, the rainy season can fail for months - sometimes years
consecutive. When this happens, rivers that once meandered through the plains
turn into corridors of dust. Lakes shrink day after day until only remain
isolated ponds, disputed by hundreds of animals. Water, which has always been the center of life,
becomes the rarest and most dangerous resource of the savannah. Where there is water, there is concentration
of animals. Where there is concentration of animals, there is conflict, disease and death.
Temperatures during a severe drought can easily exceed 40 degrees Celsius. The
mid-afternoon sun not only heats up - it punishes. Evaporation accelerates, dry vegetation
before completing its cycle and the grass, food base of large herbivores, loses value
nutritional quickly. Even when there is still visible pasture, it no longer supports. The animals
eat, but continue to lose weight. It is a silent, progressive and implacable hunger.
