Academy Conversation: The Changing Landscape of Distribution | TIFF Industry Conference 2025

The evolution of the film industry to also include technology and new media companies has impacted how audiences consume both studio and independent films. The increased viewing of films on streaming platforms and the rise of social media has also raised questions about how future generations will engage with the theatrical experience, prompting the industry to rethink distribution and acquisition strategies and discover new ways to support theatrical exhibitions — all while adapting to changing audience behaviours.

With an introduction by Bill Kramer, CEO of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, this panel brings together Academy leaders Ryan Werner (President of Global Cinema at NEON), Michèle Halberstadt (Productions and Acquisitions at ARP Selection), and Dylan Leiner (Executive Vice President of Acquisitions, Production, and Business Affairs at Sony Pictures Classics) to discuss how filmmakers and distributors are navigating these changes and ensuring that their films reach global audiences.
