Unbelievable solo fishing day offshore at Moreton Island — whales wouldn’t stop following my jetski! 🐋
At times I had Humback Whales circling right around me while I was fishing, making this one of the most unexpected and unforgettable trips I’ve ever had.
The morning started rough — windy, choppy seas and a challenging South Passage Bar crossing with 1.5–2m swell running against the tide. I was jetski fishing and mainly targeting snapper and pearl perch. Fishing was tough for the first few hours, but after moving out to a deeper reef, things turned around and I finally found some quality fish.
The real surprise of the day? The Humpback Whale encounter. Whales decided to follow me around the reef! At times they circled my fishing jetski and even surfaced right next to me. For a few minutes I sat back and captured some incredible footage of their antics.
⚠️ Important note: I wasn’t actively following or chasing these whales. In fact, I kept moving away in line with the laws around safe proximity to these marine mammals. But each time I shifted to a new fishing spot, they followed me again! I suspect they were herding bait fish around my ski, making for an easier feed for them. The ocean seemed to have a blanket of bait sitting around 10m under the surface. Take a look at the sounder screen later in the video and you'll see what I mean!
This trip had it all — challenging conditions, great fishing, and unforgettable moments on the water.

🎣 GEAR USED:
Daiwa Lexar 400 and Shimano Ocea Jigger 1500HG both with Ocean's Legacy PE3 jig rods
Snapbait Jigs 80-120g
I also caught one fish "float-lining " using lightweight Klick Sinker and ganged hooks. But due to current and wind direction, float-lining was difficult , so I spent most of the day on the Snapbaits jigs.
I did try live bait earlier but nothing took them. I ended up letting go almost all of the live bait I caught first up and they all swam off healthy - and I guess very relieved!
