In today's video, we are working on a 2010 Toyota Corolla with the 1.8-liter engine. Today, we are going to be converting the rear drum brakes to rear disc brakes. I will be explaining what parts you need and how to install them in this video. This video is nearly an hour long so it is a very detailed one. This is part 1 of this series. Part 2 is also available in which I finished the project with the new hardware that was needed to complete the job.

Pros for drums:
Less expensive to produce
Less maintenance, lasts 2-3x or more longer than brake pads for the rear due to increase friction contact area
Self-energizing effect requiring minimal pedal effort to the driver
Perfect for parking brakes
Better corrosion protection and protection from road debris, dirt, road salt, water, etc.
Good for adequate braking for everyday normal driving use
Cons for drums:
Poor heat dissipation
Brake fade after repeated stops or heavy usage/demanding conditions/aggressive driving
(Limited cooling of brake shoes/drums due to closed design of drums)
Require routine adjustment to set parking brake and pedal feel
More difficult to service and replace
Heavier than disc brakes
Pros for discs:
Superior stopping power & consistency (consistent braking performance)
Excellent heat dissipation therefore reducing brake fade
Improved pedal feel
Easier maintenance
Self-cleaning
Cons for discs:
More expensive to produce
Require more frequent maintenance and replacement
Open to contamination and external atmosphere to debris, water, salt, mud, etc.
