Vocational training allowance.What you need to know.
Vocational training allowance (BAB) helps you pay for your basic expenses if you are unable to live with your parents while completing your vocational training. This may be the case if your place of vocational training is too far from your parents’ house, for example, or if you already have your own family and your own household.

Usually, you can receive vocational training allowance only for your first vocational training position. However, you may also receive it for your second vocational training position under certain circumstances – even if you have already completed your initial vocational training.

You may also receive vocational training allowance for pre-vocational training measures (berufsvorbereitende Bildungsmaßnahmen, BVB) and in the pre-vocational phase of an assisted vocational training programme (Assistierte Ausbildung, AsA).

Vocational training allowance.Who is entitled?
In order for you to receive vocational training allowance, you and your vocational training programme must be eligible for financial assistance.

Your vocational training is eligible for financial assistance if:

it is your first vocational training programme;
it is not your first vocational training programme, but there is no other way for you to be gainfully employed on a permanent basis;
you are receiving vocational training in a profession recognised by the Vocational Training Act (Berufsausbildungsgesetz), Crafts Regulation Act (Handwerksordnung) or Maritime Labour Act (Seearbeitsgesetz);
you are receiving vocational training in a profession under part 2 of the Nursing Care Professions Act (Pflegeberufegesetz);
you have signed a vocational training contract.
In addition, you must meet the following requirements:

You do not live with your parents during your vocational training because:

your place of vocational training is located too far from your parents’ house, or
you are at least 18 years of age, or
you are or were married, or
you have at least one child who lives with you.
You do not have sufficient funds to cover the following expenses:

cost of living
cost of transport to and from your place of vocational training or vocational school
travel home to your family
work clothing
childcare costs
You are entitled to vocational training allowance even if you are not a German citizen. However, you are not entitled if you have lived in Germany on a temporary or permanent residence permit for less than 15 months without interruption.

If you have a disability, you can also receive vocational training allowance if:

you are completing a vocational training programme that deviates from the training regulations for officially recognised trades or is a special form for disabled persons;
you have to extend your vocational training;
you have to repeat your vocational training in part or in whole due to your disability and permanent participation in working life cannot be achieved otherwise;
you live with both parents or one parent.
