INSV Kaundinya Sets Sail: India Revives 1,500-Year-Old Engine-Less Ship to Oman | India Today Global

India is sailing back into its forgotten maritime past. The Indian Navy’s INSV Kaundinya, a unique engine-less stitched sailing vessel, has embarked on a historic voyage from Porbandar in Gujarat to Muscat in Oman. Unlike modern ships, this vessel uses no engines, no metal nails, and no modern propulsion systems. It relies entirely on wind, sails, and a shipbuilding technique dating back over 1,500 years.

Inspired by Ajanta cave paintings and ancient travel accounts, INSV Kaundinya has been stitched together using coir ropes, wooden planks, and natural resins by traditional craftsmen from Kerala. The project was developed jointly by the Indian Navy and the Ministry of Culture to revive India’s long-lost seafaring traditions.

The voyage retraces ancient trade routes that once connected India with West Asia and Southeast Asia, reinforcing India’s historical role as a maritime power. Named after Kaundinya, one of the earliest known Indian sailors, the expedition blends history, diplomacy, and indigenous knowledge. INSV Kaundinya is not just a ship, it is a moving symbol of India’s civilisational confidence returning to the seas.
