Why homeless people avoid shelters

In this crack house tour video, I expose the shocking conditions of a homeless shelter. An emergency bed in St Mungo’s Mare Street Hackney in London UK, funded by Mayor of London Sadiq Khan for roughsleepers, where vulnerable street homeless like me are placed with 68 drug addicts who openly smoke crack and heroin in their rooms in the “supported accommodation” with zero support from staff.

This is part 2 the communal kitchen - filthy, wrecked, fire hazards, cockroaches, mice, rotting food left in the oven and a pan that smelt so bad they must have been rotting for a long time! A bag of bread with blue mould. Crack & heroin burns on worktop!

Breathing in the constant secondhand crack & heroin smoke made me very nauseous, faint, breathless and sore throat. You can hear me suffocating in the videos. I had no choice but to leave after only 2 nights back to the streets to continue sleeping rough.

Three staff told me they allow smoking drugs in the hostel. Obviously this is illegal. No lessons learnt from the death of Noni Atishki in a St Mungo’s hostel from heroin overdose in 2023.

St Mungo’s are profiting around £2000 a month for each of the 68 “supported accommodation” rooms paid by universal credit (benefits), classed as “exempt accommodation” from benefit cap, committing benefit fraud by offering residents no support. St Mungo’s annual income is £123 million!

I reported myself to Streetlink. Thamesreach Rapid Response homeless outreach team came, then left me on the streets for 12 days. After chasing them up, Thamesreach placed me in emergency bed at St Mungo’s hostel for 3 nights which turned out to be in a crack den.

At St Mungo’s Hackney there are 2 emergency beds & No Second Night Out (NSNO) shelter in the basement with I believe 15 mattresses on floor.
