Stanford seemed on its way to beating unbeaten Arizona State. But this game had one thrill left, and it belonged to the Sun Devils. They somehow atoned for a terrible error, just after committing it.
Tex Wright’s one-yard plunge with 13 seconds remaining lifted No. 11 ASU to a 21-17 win. Todd Hons took 38 seconds to drive his team 80 yards in six plays—and answer John Elway’s heroics.
The visitors led 17-14 on a touchdown with 51 seconds to play. The Cardinal had moved 80 yards after Wright lost a fumble in the end zone from the one-yard-line. The miscue proved more momentary than costly. Hons made Stanford pay dearly with time running out.
Facing only a three-man rush, the Devils' QB completed 4-of-5 on the deciding series. The throws covered 14, 16, 22, and 27 yards.
After firing legendary coach Frank Kush and spending two years on probation, Arizona State (10-2) broke through in 1982. Only season-ending home losses to Washington and Arizona prevented a Rose Bowl trip. Pac-10 champ UCLA wasn't on the schedule.
The Sun Devils completed their fourth Pac-10 season with a Fiesta Bowl win and a No. 6 spot in both polls. But none of that would have happened without this thriller.
“I have tears in my eyes, I’m so happy,” ASU head coach Darryl Rogers said.
