In this sequel to my “Ships in Tynemouth” video, we journey to three iconic lights guiding vessels into the Tyne: the striking red Herd Groyne lighthouse at South Shields, the classic South Pier lighthouse, and the towering North Pier lighthouse in Tynemouth. Then we explore the medieval Tynemouth Priory and Castle perched on the headland before cruising past a rather speedy and versatile Robalo boat.
Herd Groyne Lighthouse (the red light) Built in 1882, this 15 m red beacon changes its directional light—white, green or red—every 10 s, guiding ships safely around Herd Sands with ranges up to 19 miles in white light.
South Pier Lighthouse Erected in 1895 on South Shields Pier, this 15 m white tower shows white, red and green sectors visible up to 13, 9 and 8 miles respectively, with a foghorn blast every 10 s to pierce misty conditions.
North Pier (Tynemouth) Lighthouse Tynemouth’s pierhead light stands 26 m tall, its revolving lens flashing three white bursts every 10 s that reach 26 miles, paired with a fog signal for low-visibility navigation—making it the tallest on the Tyne entrance.
Tynemouth Priory & Castle Dominating the headland, the priory’s Gothic choir and nave date from 1190–1260 atop 2,000 years of Iron Age and Roman occupation. After the Dissolution, the site became a coastal fortress until 1956, with walls, towers and a restored gatehouse ringed by gun emplacements.
Robalo R160 Center Console At 16 ’4″ (4.98 m) LOA and a mere 10″ (0.25 m) draft, the R160 invites shallow-water fishing and weekend adventure. With up to 90 HP, 24 gal fuel, V-Plane hull and a 10-year hull warranty, it’s the perfect retirement boat dream.

► Like & abonnez-vous !
