Jack and Jill went up the hill
To fetch a pail of water.
Jack fell down and broke his crown,
And Jill came tumbling after.

Up Jack got and home did trot,
As fast as he could caper;
To Old Dame Dob who patched his nob
With vinegar and brown paper.

Then Jill came in and she did grin
To see his paper plaster;
Her mother whipped her across her knee
For causing such a disaster.

Then up they went once more again,
But held each other tighter.
They climbed with care, and stopped to stare
At clouds that floated lighter.

They filled the pail and cheered with glee,
No tumbling this time ‘round.
They danced back down, through flowered ground,
Their feet upon the mound.

Jack said, “Next time we’ll bring a rope,
To pull the bucket faster!”
Jill laughed and said, “Or maybe sleds—
We’ll turn it into laughter!”

They ran back home, their job well done,
The sun began to set.
A day of spills, a hill of thrills—
A time they won’t forget!
