IIT Madras R2D2 with Thryv Mobility Launches YD One - Ultra - Light Wheelchair

IIT Madras, TTK Centre for Rehabilitation Research and Device Development, in partnership with Thryv Mobility, has unveiled YD One, the country’s first indigenously developed ultra-light active wheelchair, weighing just 9 kg! Designed with aerospace-grade materials and a rigid mono-tube frame, it’s custom-built for each user’s body, posture, and lifestyle, combining world-class engineering with affordability.
YD One launched in the presence of Chief Guest Surgeon Vice Admiral Anupam Kapur, Nau Sena Medal, Director General Hospital Services (Armed Forces); Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras; Project Coordinator Dr. Manish Anand, Assistant Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering, IIT Madras; Dr. Ravinder Singh, Scientist, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR); and other dignitaries and stakeholders, unlike generic, hospital-grade wheelchairs, offers unmatched mobility, independence, and dignity, empowering users to move freely, lift it effortlessly, and navigate daily life confidently.
The launch is supported by Trimble CSR, which will provide the first 20 wheelchairs to deserving users. RRD and Schueco India are also contributing to future provisioning, making world-class mobility an everyday reality.
