Shoei honors this third generation of its full-face touring lid with updates to the helmet’s aerodynamics, ventilation, and shield. While much of the major construction stays the same as the previous GT-Air 2, these updates bring an evolution to the brand’s touring line – which we also have seen with the Neotec 3.
The Shoei GT-Air 3 uses the brand’s Advanced Integrated Matrix (AIM) construction which combines hand-laid interwoven layers of fiberglass with organic fibers and resin to create the strongest, lightest shell possible. The GT-Air 3 is available in three shell sizes which break down to: XS-M, L, XL-XXL. In this third iteration, Shoei has put an emphasis on improving the aerodynamics of the helmet by integrating new spoiler edges on the sides of the helmet as well as smoothing the transitions between the visor and the helmet while also slimming down the lid’s chin area. Shoei claims this has resulted in a 6% drop in wind resistance from the GT-Air 2 and 11% decrease in lift from the previous version.
Shoei also reworked the GT-Air 3’s ventilation system by moving the top exhaust vents higher on the helmet, slightly redesigning the vent sliders, and optimizing the lower front vent by making it larger and adding a removable bug filter. Shoei says the top exhaust vents have been wind tunnel tested for optimized exhaust flow, though there is some concern about water making its way into the helmet should one find themselves in driving rain. Overall in our tests, we would still wish for better airflow out of this third-gen helmet.
The GT-Air 3 boasts Shoei’s all-new CNS-1C shield which has been optimized to provide high optical quality while providing a large field of vision and features detents. It also reduces 99% of incoming UV radiation into the inside of the helmet according to Shoei. The Japanese brand has moved to a center-locking mechanism with the new shield, but in our experience with the Neotec 3 and RF-1400, the ease-of-use has been inconsistent with our GT-Air 3 showing the most difficulty to latch. Shoei has also made its QSV-2 sun visor larger with 5mm extra coverage toward the bottom.
