১৯৫১ সালের ৫ অক্টোবর শুরু হয়েছিল ভারতের প্রথম নির্বাচনে ভোটগ্রহণ, আর তা শেষ হয় ১৯৫২ সালের ২১ ফেব্রুয়ারি। এই বিশাল সময় লাগার পিছনে কারণ ছিল অনেক। সাধারণ মানুষ তো বটেই, অনেক সরকারি কর্মচারীরও নির্বাচন পরিচালনার অভিজ্ঞতা ছিল না। চার মাস ধরে চলা ভারতের সেই প্রথম লোকসভা নির্বাচনে ৪৮৯টি আসনের মধ্যে ৩৬৪টিতে জিতেছিল কংগ্রেস। লম্বা সেই নির্বাচনে প্রথম ভোট গৃহীত হয়েছিল হিমাচল প্রদেশে। শ্যাম শরণ নেগি স্বাধীন ভারতে প্রথম ভোট দিয়েছিলেন ১৯৫১ সালে। সেবারের লোকসভা নির্বাচন ১৯৫২ সালে অনুষ্ঠিত হলেও হিমাচলে অত্যধিক ঠান্ডার করণে আগাম ভোট নেওয়া হয়েছিল। আজকের ভিডিওতে থাকল ভারতবর্ষের প্রথম নির্বাচনের কথা।

On 5th October 1951, voting began for India’s first general elections, and it concluded on 21st February 1952. There were many reasons behind this long duration. Not only the general public, but even many government officials had no prior experience in conducting elections.

In that first Lok Sabha election, which spanned four months, the Congress party won 364 out of 489 seats. The very first votes of this historic election were cast in Himachal Pradesh. Shyam Saran Negi became the first person to vote in independent India in 1951. Although the Lok Sabha election was officially held in 1952, voting in Himachal was conducted early due to extreme cold weather conditions.
