The Forest of Dean has several old railway tunnels, including the Blue Rock Tunnel, which was once part of the Forest of Dean Railway, and Hawthorns Tunnel (also known as Euroclydon), built for the Mitcheldean Road and Forest of Dean Junction Railway. Another is the Tintern Tunnel, a 182-yard tunnel on the Wye Valley Railway, which is now part of the Wye Valley Greenway cycle path. Many of the old lines have closed, but some tunnels are being preserved, used for other purposes (like storage), or redeveloped into walking and cycling paths.
Key tunnels in the Forest of Dean:
Blue Rock Tunnel: This tunnel was built to carry the Forest of Dean Railway through a rocky outcrop near Ruspidge and Soudley.
Hawthorns Tunnel (Euroclydon): A 638-yard tunnel built for the Mitcheldean Road and Forest of Dean Junction Railway, it saw use during World War II for ammunition storage and later for mushroom cultivation.
Tintern Tunnel: Located on the Wye Valley Railway, it is now part of a cycle path, the Wye Valley Greenway.
Mierystock Tunnel: This is another example of a historic railway tunnel in the Forest of Dean, with access issues.
Tunnels and redevelopment:
Many former railway lines, like the one that included Blue Rock and Hawthorns Tunnels, closed in the 1960s.
Some tunnels are being restored or redeveloped for public use, such as Tintern Tunnel, which is now a part of a cycle path.
Other tunnels, like the Hawthorns tunnel, were used for other purposes after the railway closed.
