Evesham Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Worcestershire, and around 25 miles south of Birmingham, is the town of Evesham.

Geographically, Evesham is situated along a meander of the River Avon just downstream from Stratford. It was here in the 7th century, so the legend goes, that a swineherd named Eof saw a vision of the Virgin Mary whilst tending his pigs. He rushed to tell the Bishop of Worcester, who subsequently saw the same vision upon investigating. Deciding that the site was blessed, the bishop persuaded the king of Mercia to found an abbey here. Thus, in 701 AD Evesham Abbey was founded as a Benedictine monastery.

On the 4th of August 1265 the Battle of Evesham took place between the forces of Henry III and the rebel barons led by Simon de Montfort during the Second Barons' War. The royal army, led by Prince Edward (the future King Edward I), outmanoeuvred the barons and killed de Montfort, who was subsequently buried at Evesham Abbey. In the aftermath, the war continued for a further two years before ending in victory for the Royalists.

Between 1539 and 1540, Evesham Abbey was dissolved in accordance with Henry VIII's Dissolution of the Monasteries. A few remnants survived, including the free-standing bell tower (seen prominently at the 15-and-a-half minute mark) as well as the two medieval parish churches within its precinct, namely the Church of All Saints and the Church of St Lawrence. The Church of All Saints (with the tall spire, visible from Market Square) remains the town's parish church to this day, while the Church of St Lawrence was declared redundant in 1977.

In 1852 the railway arrived in Evesham courtesy of the Oxford, Worcester and Wolverhampton Railway. Today, the station forms part of the Cotswold Line which runs between Oxford and Hereford.

Famous people from Evesham include musician Jim Capaldi, actor Daniel Flynn and impressionist Alistair McGowan.
