Located in Central New Mexico near the town of Carrizozo, the Valley of Fires Recreation Area is a stunning landscape defined by the Malpais (Spanish for Badlands) one of the youngest lava flows in the United States.
The valley is covered by a 44 mile long ribbon of black, twisted basalt rock created by a volcanic eruption approximately 5000 years ago. Humans would have known about this as this area was populated at that time.
