Hans Weilenmann's CDC & Elk Caddis is a well-known and effective pattern, but it relies on high-quality CDC that can be tough to come by. This variation, which Walter has been tying since 2006 or so, palmer-wraps the CDC feather through a dubbed underbody. In the latest iteration presented here, the CDC is first spun into a dubbing loop, removing the brittle stem of the CDC feather from the equation for even more durability.
The color combo given here matches the Nectopsyche (White Miller) caddis that's the most important hatch on the Firehole River in Yellowstone Park. Because this is a busy, active caddis, that's constantly fluttering and skittering over the water surface, suggesting fine motion is critical. The subtle motion of CDC is perfect for this.
Hang the Glasshead Pheasant Tail Walter presented last week as a dropper under this pattern during caddis hatches, then hang on!
