Summary:

SFAR 73 Awareness training: MAST BUMPING Lesson for Helicopter Pilots. Though this focuses on the Robinson models of helicopter, much of the concepts translate to any helicopter with a semirigid rotor system.

Mast Bumping and Low G Hazards.
Low G in a Robinson Helicopter must be avoided due to it's teetering rotor system and the risk of Mast Bumping.

Mast Bumping due to Low G or abrupt pilot control input is usually fatal. A number of accidents have occurred as the result of Mast bumping. For this reason, awareness training must be completed.

Avoiding flight into conditions that are more likely for low-g (turbulent conditions) and avoiding performing a low-g pushover are key.

This video does also talk about the correct way Robinson indicates to recover from log-g but emphasizes that low-g should never be practiced in flight due to the likeliness of a fatal accident. Even Robinson test pilots have been killed. This ground training is meant as an aid for your training but does not replace your training in person with your flight instructor.

Though SFAR 73 is written for the R22 and R44, any teetering rotor system is susceptible including the Huey, R66, Jet Ranger and Long Ranger

Feel free to ask question in the comments below.

I am certified flight instructor in the US and Korea and have over 6200 hours as a pilot.

I am working on Ground School Lessons on all the SFAR 73 topics as well as other ground and flight school topics. Hope this helps.
