"Svečana pesma" was a composition proposed to be the anthem of the Federal People's Republic of Yugoslavia at the session of the Socialist Alliance of the Working People of Yugoslavia in 1959. The text of the anthem was written by Yugoslav poet Mira Aleckovic, while the earlier work "New Yugoslavia" (1946) by the famous composer Nikola Hercigonja was taken as the melody. The anthem, although officially proposed, was rejected due to the hidden opposition of the leadership of the Croatian League of Communists. As a temporary solution, the pan-Slavic song "Hej Sloveni" was kept unofficially until 1988.
