Japan’s attempts to replicate America’s legendary B-17 Flying Fortress ended in two remarkable failures that exposed the limits of its wartime industry.
The first effort, the G5N “Shinzan,” was so heavy and underpowered it could barely leave the ground.
The second, the G8N “Renzan,” finally worked—but came far too late. Only four prototypes were completed before Japan’s collapsing war economy brought everything to a standstill.
While Japanese engineers struggled to copy a handful of bombers, thousands of real B-17 Flying Fortresses were already raining destruction across Japan’s skies.
