Session I - Secure Firearm Storage Education & Policy Series by SAFE

This series will prepare medical students and healthcare professionals to be knowledgeable and effective advocates for evidence-based secure firearm storage and child access prevention policies.

Course Goal: Students and physicians will be able to think critically and independently about the secure storage law in their state. Students will form their own opinions and be able to articulate: Should their state law be changed? If so, why? And if so, how?

In Session 1, attendees will be educated about the current state of affairs in the US regarding secure firearm storage laws. This will cover federal laws and the range of state laws giving learners a framework and resources to evaluate their state’s law. Attendees will learn what is meant by a child access prevention law and a required secure storage law. They will be able to identify factors that weaken some child access prevention laws. They will have the tools to analyze the strengths and weaknesses of Wisconsin's law compared to other states.
