Climb Mt Kosciuszko Solo Winter Snowshoe Hike. Snow Camp & Summit Sunrise. Australia's Tallest Peak!

Mt Kosciuszko (Kozi), Australia's tallest 'peak', stands at 2228 metres (7310 feet) above sea level. It is located in Kosciuszko National Park, NSW, Australia, and forms part of the Main Range of the gorgeous Snowy Mountains.

To get to Kosciuszko, you first need to drive to Jindabyne, and then on to Thredbo (about a 6-hour drive from Sydney). From Threbo you can either take the Kosciuszko Express Chairlift and proceed to the Kosciuszko summit walk from there, or you can start walking from the Thredbo itself by taking Merritt's Track. The Merritt's Track option will add another few hours to the hike.


The hike to the summit is straightforward, but you shouldn't underestimate it, especially not in winter. The weather can change at any time, and if you aren't prepared, a fun hike can become a tiresome chore, or in extreme cases, a tragic event. The hike is a challenge when carrying a heavy pack and overnight gear, even for those who are fit. The altitude, although not extreme, is still enough to create a mile shortness of breath. I find physical exertion slightly tougher at 2000m than at sea level.


Staying hydrated is very important at any altitude. At mildly high altitudes like 2000m it is even more important to drink plenty of fluids. Make sure to take at least 2 litres of drinking water with you if you're planning to stay overnight. The remainder you can get by melting snow.


I recommend using snowshoes or cleats if you decide to go in winter. The snow on the Kosciuszko Plateau is often well-packed and icey, which means you can easily slip and fall. You can rent snowshoes at Jindabyne.


I also recommend renting a Personal Locator Beacon. You can hire one for free at the Jindabyne Information Centre. There is cell phone reception on Kosciuszko, but don't rely on this for your safety as reception may cut in and out depending on the weather and your location.

Hiking to the top of Kozi in winter is an achievement, and is well-worth attempting solo. Stay overnight, and you'll enjoy the privilege of a glorious summit sunrise! The best thing about camping in winter? No Mozzies!
