This is a female mosquito seen under the microscope, and up close her story becomes very clear. Her abdomen is swollen with fresh blood and packed with developing eggs, showing exactly why mosquitoes behave the way they do. Unlike males, female mosquitoes must drink blood to get the nutrients needed to produce eggs, which is why they bite humans and animals.
When viewed through magnification, you can see the blood-filled stomach, segmented body, sharp proboscis, and clusters of eggs forming inside. One single blood meal can allow a female mosquito to lay hundreds of eggs, which explains how mosquito populations grow so fast.
There are several major types of mosquitoes found around the world. Aedes mosquitoes, often active during the day, are known for spreading dengue and Zika and usually have black-and-white striped legs. Anopheles mosquitoes are mostly active at night and are responsible for transmitting malaria, often resting at an angled position. Culex mosquitoes, commonly found in urban and stagnant water areas, can spread diseases like West Nile virus and filariasis.
Mosquitoes locate humans using carbon dioxide from breath, body heat, and natural skin odors. Even though they are small, mosquitoes are considered one of the deadliest animals on Earth due to the diseases they carry. Seeing them under the microscope reveals a side of nature that is intense, efficient, and completely hidden from the naked eye.
