The Vietcong, also known as the National Liberation Front, was a communist-led force that operated in South Vietnam. While they were often seen as determined guerrilla fighters, their tactics, and strategies also had a dark side that left deep scars on history.

To understand how the Vietcong emerged, we need to go back to Vietnam’s long struggle against foreign rule. For centuries, Vietnam had been controlled by various powers, including China and France. The French colonized Vietnam in the late 19th century, turning it into part of French Indochina alongside Laos and Cambodia. Under French rule, many Vietnamese people, especially the poor, suffered from heavy taxation, forced labor, and land seizures that favored wealthy French and Vietnamese elites. By the early 20th century, resentment against colonial rule had grown, and resistance movements began to form.
