Do you know about the Southernmost Temple of India ?
Located in Kanyakumari, Kumari Amman Temple or Bagavathi amman Temple is one of the most sacred temples in India. The place Kanyakumari gets its name from Hindu Goddess Devi Kanniyakumari, referred as the Virgin Goddess and the presiding deity of this temple. The temple is considered as one of the 108 Maha Shakti Peethas.
Dating back to more than 3000 years, this temple is not only religiously significant but also has great historical importance. This ancient temple of Kanyakumari also presents mesmerising scenic beauty as it is location by the side of vast spread of ocean. Spiritual aura, breathtaking natural beauty and an ancient architecture makes this temple a must visit not only for devotees but for every traveller on Kanyakumari Tour.
Remarkable feature of the alluring idol of the Goddess Kanya Kumari is the diamond nose ring of the Goddess. There are many popular stories related to the striking shine of the nose ring. As per one popular tale, the shine reflecting from the nose ring is so strong that once a sailor mistook it as a lighthouse and ultimately hit the ship on the rocks. This is the reason why eastern door of the temple is kept closed and is opened only five times in a year, on special occasions.
Kanyakumari is a special destination in many different ways. It is the southernmost tip of the mainland of India. Three major water bodies – the Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean – Triveni Sangam converge right here in Kanyakumari. Such a geographically blessed destination is rare and these features make Kanniyakumari one of the most visited places in India annually.
Kanniyakumari is the only spot in India from where you can watch the spectacle of the sunset and the moonrise happening simultaneously on Full Moon days. It’s even grander during the day of ‘Chithra Pournami’ when the Sun and the Moon will appear facing each other in the same horizon.
