Id like to start by saying thank you to the local Mãori Tribes who inhabit the Te Urewera region for allowing us the opportunity to explore, embrace and enjoy this scared land. For this we are forever grateful 🙏 Id also like to apologise for any mis pronunciation of the huts and campsites. This is something which ill try to improve on.
The Lake Waikaremoana tracks is a great walk that passes through the Te Urewera region, which is ancestral home of the Ngãi Tühoe. The track follows the shores of the lake and takes visitors through native forest, shrubland and valleys of mist.
DAY 1 - Onepoto - Waiopaoa Hut via Panekiri hut (18kms)
DAY 2 - Waiopaoa Hut - Waiharuru hut via Korokoro falls (20kms)
DAY 3 - Waiharuru Hut - Hopuruahine Landing (8kms)
We parked at Lake Waikaremoana holiday park as it seemed the safest place to leave our camper. Alternatively, you can get picked up from here via water taxi and takien to which ever end of the walk you choose to start from. However, we chose to save some cash and hitch hike our way to Onepoto from the holiday park (BIG UPs to Olive and Andre).
