Windsurfing spot BORNHOLM, Denmark | Slalom & Wave

Windsurfing Bornhom, Denmark. Some impressions of this summer. Have fun watching.
SPOT REPORT: Bornholm is a little Danish island located in the Baltic Sea. About 170 km southeast of Copenhagen and 35 km southeast of Sweden and north of Poland. The island is about 560 square km. The northern two-thirds of the island is composed of granite with a rocky cliff coast, the more popular southern part forms an undulating surface of sandstone, limestone, and shale, with a dune coast with clear and clean waters and perfectly white beaches.
You take the ferry to get to the island, one of which is the Ferry of Sassnitz, Germany. You get there via the German island Ruegen. There is an impressive bridge to get to Ruegen. If you have time don’t miss out on te beauty of the nature. Ruegen is also a very interesting area for windsurfing. As from Ruegen it is a boattrip of about 3,5 hours to get Bornholm. You arrive at Ronne.
There is a lot of tourism on the island, yet, you don’t come across many people. There are many agencies where you can rent houses. Beautiful coloured houses in the forests, dunes and directly at the beaches. All is embedded in nature and there is plenty of space around the houses and great privacy. It’s just lovely. We even had deer in the garden. Bornholm is a very cosy island perfectly suited for people who like nature and the quiet. You see a lot of families visiting this island to go biking and enjoy the beaches and dunes. There is very little traffic and special bike paths which makes biking safe.

Surfing is on in the south. There you have paradise like beaches, with amazing white sand. There are various places to park the car directly at the beach. It all feels like paradise island, just the palm trees are missing! The sand is so fine and white, it is amazing. Perfect shoot conditions for windsurf magazines 😉
There are various spots in the south to go windsurfing, depending on wind direction and your discipline preferences. At Balka there is a little surfschool (Easwind), where you can learn to surf. We tried with westwind, but then the wind is offshore you need to go out far and be with a group of surfers for safety reasons.
The best was Udegardsevejen, with west wind. This is a little road leading to the spot, where you can park your car 50 meters from the water. The locals go there too and find it a great place to windsurf and kitesurf. We surfed 10 out of 14 days and were happy when there where more than 5 windsurfers joining us. During these 10 times we used 5,6 to 8,6 sails. It is an unbelievable beautiful and diverse spot. The conditions for west wind were good for slalom gear (intermediate / advanced level). When southern wind the waves build up quickly and impressive. The conditions get serious the more swell there is, easily to 2 meters high. Surely great for wave fanatics!
We did not try to go surfing in the north, because of the rocks and cliffs. And why should you if the conditions in the south were fantastic, divers and challenging.
The climate in august was nice, quiet moderate. We had about 18 degrees during the night and during the day (in the shadow) about 25. If you like sun but not to hot it is a great island to be.
There are campings that are located directly by the sea. Just a little walk (maybe use a little trolly ~300 m) and you can rig your gear. But you need to be aware that the possibility that you will be alone on the water is really great!

What can I say: Beautiful, calm family island for nature and beach lovers. Lots of agriculture, forests, dunes and beaches. Great opportunities for windsurfing, slalom and wave!
