Lunar New Year is arguably my favorite occasion to celebrate here in Vietnam and here’s why I think it’ll be around for a long, long time.

Lunar New Year is celebrated in a number of cultures. It takes into consideration the cycles of the moon and the sun and usually falls between late-January and early-February on the Gregorian (solar) calendar. Here in Vietnam, it’s called Tết Nguyên Đán (Festival of the First Day). It’s 설날 (seollal)/ New Year’s Day in Korea and 春节 (chunjie)/ Spring Festival in China and other Chinese-speaking countries and communities.
I was recently explaining the concept of Lunar New Year to some Westerner friends who didn’t culturally grow up with this and they said it reminded them a lot of the values of Christmas, being very family-centric and all ✨ while the New Year on Jan 1st is more significant other/ friend/ colleague-centric (at lease in my experience).
