No other music genre can, and much less wants, to address personal, social or even national wrongs more poignantly, more memorably or more often than rock and roll, that umbrella term for the music born out of the unholy trinity of rhythm, melody and irreverence. In the case of Mdou Moctar and his brilliant new record Funeral For Justice, everything happens inside a similar triangle, the three vertices of which are represented by some mean drumming, speckless guitar playing and Mdou’s unassuming vocals. When a country’s motto becomes asservissement, inégalité, hostilité, a man’s best friend is rock and roll.
